Modular student accommodation in the heart of Camden
This project for Hallmark followed their previous successes in the co-living sector, offering rental accommodation with quality communal facilities to the student and professional markets. Two separate blocks of 7 and 3 storeys were created using fully fitted shipping container modules, linked by a single storey structure and a double storey basement below the entire footprint of the site.
Significant engineering challenges were posed by the proximity of tall neighbouring buildings and adjacent busy roads. To address these the substructure was designed with steel sheet piled retaining walls around the entire perimeter, propped by the floor levels below ground level. The structure to ground floor level comprised of a steel frame with composite slabs, bearing on a thick reinforced concrete raft.
Above ground, reinforced concrete cores were designed to provide stability to both blocks. Long span transfer beams were integrated in the designs at ground floor to provide open plan warehouse space to the lower levels.
