Sympathetic refurbishment of science block and Grade II listed lodge to create new administration block
The Cloister building was designed with traditional load bearing solid masonry walls, bearing on solid concrete strip foundations, and supporting a timber joisted flat roof, with steel beams and trimmers around rooflights.
The school wished to maintain an open plan space below the balcony, so stability of the balcony was designed with cantilevered columns from foundation level, supported on reinforced concrete pile caps, on screwed helical piles.
In addition, the existing Grade II listed Lodge was refurbished and a single-storey extension added to create a new administration building.
The extension was designed with traditional load bearing cavity masonry walls supporting a timber joist flat roof. Rooflights were introduced to provide maximum daylight, creating a pleasant working environment.
